The Elkind Headache Center specializes in the expert diagnosis and up-to-date treatment of headache. Personal and individualized care combines with the most modern therapeutic methods to provide patients the opportunity to alleviate the discomfort and disability associated with headache.
Relief can be obtained through accurate diagnosis which is the cornerstone of treatment. Dr. Arthur H. Elkind, Director of the Elkind Headache Center, interviews all new patients to obtain a complete headache history as well as a general medical history. Patients are examined to determine their physical and neurological status. Appropriate laboratory x-ray, electrocardiogram, and other tests may be required to establish the diagnosis and evaluate the health of the individuals. Facilities for most of these studies are available on the premises.
The primary facet of treatment is specific medications in amounts and combinations determined by Dr. Elkind's long experience. Therapy may also include dietary supervision, psychological counseling, and cessation of any previously used medication. The newer treatment including biofeedback training and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are also prescribed. Research studies utilizing the newest methods of treatment are often in progress. Continuity of care is extremely important for follow-up visit, particularly at the beginning of the program.
Patients with problems requiring additional consultations are referred to a appropriate specialists. In select situations patients may be hospitalized at the Mount Vernon Hospital where a more comprehensive diagnosis may be made and an intensive treatment program instituted. Medical supervision at the hospital is provided by Dr. Elkind.
